Our
Story

In the 1990s, few teachers were trained to work with gifted learners, lacking official mandates and organisational support. To address this gap, a new initiative was created in 1995. The program hosted workshops nationwide, aided parents and schools, and organised conferences. Yet, schools faced limitations in aiding gifted students due to resources and numbers.

Thus, the One Day School emerged, starting with 40 students in unconventional spaces like church crypts and fire stations. Despite financial constraints, support came from various sources like book fairs and donations. The program developed a tailored approach that recognised the multifaceted influence of giftedness on learning. It quickly attracted students, eventually accommodating nearly 600 learners. The initiative expanded to teacher training courses, impacting educators globally. Despite its humble beginnings, the One Day School continues to thrive and support gifted learners.

Our Vision Statement

That every gifted child is met with recognition and caring understanding of their different learning and developmental needs, and supported in developing their qualities and abilities to the full. That each gifted child will be so nurtured that they will grow in wisdom, insight, and compassion in the use of their talents in the wider world. That each gifted child will be empowered with the belief that every individual can make a difference in creating a better world. That every gifted child will retain a sense of fun and delight in the process of living and being. That every teacher will have the support and guidance needed to achieve this vision.

What we do

Rotorua One Day School provides for children with especially active minds and imaginations, children who need more challenge and extension than schools can easily provide. They are interesting children with much promise for the future, but often they are also children who feel lonely at school or who don't fit in.

For one full school day every week and with their principal's permission, the ODS programme meets their very different learning needs and enables them to meet and work with children who think and react like they do.

One Day School Rotorua caters for children from 6 - 12 years old.

How is One Day School Structured?

The One Day School program diverges from traditional classroom structures, focusing on the unique learning styles of gifted children. Rather than rigid subject divisions, it emphasizes high-level challenges, encouraging exploration, creativity, and critical thinking.

Tasks are designed to foster deep understanding and imaginative problem-solving. Additionally, the program addresses social needs, fostering self-awareness and group skills to support the holistic growth of each child.
